Our Story

Where NopalMates came from

NopalMates was born from the wish of a group of migrants in Australia to share the experiences and lessons gathered through their own adaptation. Each of us faced challenges and discoveries that, looking back, we would have liked to know about earlier.

That experience is what we now want to put at the service of those arriving and starting their own path in this country. Moved by a deep sense of solidarity and a wish to help, we set out to create a space that not only supports, but passes the help forward — so that whoever feels supported today becomes the one who helps others tomorrow.

Where we are and who we are

Today NopalMates is a community of Mexicans in Perth, Australia, built on genuine help and a spirit of brotherhood. Our name says it: “Nopal” stands for our roots and our link to Mexico, while “Mates” reflects the friendship and companionship we want to build here in Australia.

We believe in a multiplier effect, where the support and information given passes from one generation of migrants to the next, creating a continuous network of help for new arrivals.

Anyone with that same sense of genuine support can be part of NopalMates, with the promise that together we will make this transition more accessible, kinder and less lonely.

What NopalMates is not

We are not a migration agency and we do not give legal advice. We connect, inform and accompany. The final decision about who to turn to is always yours.
